Anticipation

Anticipation is a principle of animation that prepares/provides a signal for the audience of an upcoming action.

An example of this is a character pulling back his hand to swing a hammer. The action of pulling his arm behind him would provide anticipation for the subsequent action of swinging his arm. This can also tie in with exaggeration depending on how exaggeratedly you carry out these actions.
