Compression

Audio is compressed by being saved in different formats much like images. Loss-less saving would require the file to be saved as a .wav file.

A lossy file format is a .mp3 which will compress much of the data during the coding process. When in coding, it will remove the non-audible or barely audible which reduces the overall space required for the file making it smaller and hence lossy.
